Doesn't Clio already back up my data?
Clio's data centers are world-class. Database mirroring protects Clio from hackers and natural disasters. However, these mechanisms do not protect you from the following:
- If a user deletes a folder, Clio's servers will mirror that deletion across their entire network.
- If a disgruntled employee wipes a matter, Clio's system sees it as an authorized command, not a disaster to be mitigated.
- If your specific account is locked, compromised, or experiencing a sync error with a third-party application, the platform being online doesn't help you get your files.
Clio themself recommends for firms to keep a separate backup of their data. This is because they understand they are a productivity platform, not a long-term storage solution.
Why do I need a separate backup for a cloud-based system?
There is a common misconception that cloud security equals data protection. Platforms like Clio are responsible for keeping the lights on and the servers running. However, you are responsible for the data inside. If a file is deleted, overwritten, or corrupted at the user level, the cloud application propagates that error. A separate backup is the only way to undo human or localized mistakes.
What happens if a user accidentally deletes a Matter or Contact?
Because our backup is autonomous, the deletion in your cloud application has no effect on your FileScience storage. Your data remains intact and isolated from the error.
Is my data encrypted, and where is it stored?
Your data is encrypted in-transit via TLS 1.3 and at-rest using AES-256.
We understand that for many firms, where your data lives is a matter of legal or regulatory requirement. FileScience offers flexible data residency:

- Enterprise: Storage can be provisioned in specific geographic regions upon request to meet legal, regulatory, or client-mandated compliance needs

What happens to my data if I decide to leave Clio?
Normally, when you cancel your Clio subscription, your access to their platform eventually expires, and your data is purged from their servers after a set grace period. Because FileScience is an air-gapped solution, your data remains safely stored and accessible in your account regardless of your status with Clio.
Can I delete my Clio backups?
Yes, but only the designated FileScience organization owner can initiate a deletion request. Once the request is processed your data will be purged from our servers.
